Frequently asked

Questions we get about wildfire risk in Canada.

Is wildfire risk modelled differently in Canada than in the United States?

It has to be. Canadian fuels, fire behavior and the insurance market are all different, and a model calibrated on the American West does not transfer cleanly across the border. RZRisk Canada is built on Canada's own fuel classifications and fire behavior rather than adapted from the U.S. version.

What Canadian fuel types are modelled?

The 16 fuel classifications from the Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction system, modelled at 250 metre resolution. More than 30 million synthetic wildfires have been simulated across British Columbia and Alberta, with scenarios climate-adjusted through 2100.

Can one insurer use the same wildfire scoring across the U.S. and Canada?

Yes. The method is the same explainable, property-level approach on both sides of the border, so carriers writing in both markets get consistent scoring rather than two incompatible views. See RZRisk for the U.S. model.
