How do insurance companies identify properties exposed to wildfire?

Insurers combine wildfire hazard, property characteristics, surrounding vegetation, historical fire activity and geospatial exposure data to find the properties most likely to be affected. What data goes into a wildfire risk score?

Fuels, terrain, weather, structure characteristics and observed fire behavior. Fuels describe what can burn and how readily; terrain governs how fire moves, since fire accelerates uphill; weather drives spread and ember cast; and structure characteristics decide whether a building survives the embers that reach it. RedZone models 40 vegetation and fuel types and validates scores against the outcomes of real fires rather than simulation alone.

Can wildfire risk be assessed for a single address?

Yes. Property-level scoring is what separates modern wildfire analytics from the territory averages insurers relied on for years. Averaging across a region hides the variation that decides losses, and it prices a hardened home with clear defensible space the same as its neighbour with a wood-shake roof and vegetation to the wall.
